Masks have been a big part of many cultures throughout history, and this weekend they will play a part in keeping culture alive in the Illawarra.
The 2008 Project Masquerade Ball is the second annual fundraiser of its kind aimed at raising money for the artist-run Project Contemporary Artspace in Wollongong.
Project gains all of its funds through membership fees, donations and fundraising and last year’s Masquerade Ball, the first run by Project, was a huge success, raising more than $1000 for the gallery.
Chairperson of the 2008 Project Masquerade Ball Sara Zahorodny said this year’s event, scheduled for this Saturday night with a 7.30pm start, will have a magical theme.
“It’s called the Winter Wonderland Midnight Blue Masquerade Ball,” Ms Zahorodny said.
“People can either come in all three (themes; Blue, Masquerade or Winter) or just one and we have collaborated with our 30 x 30 exhibition, which we have every year, open to our members.”
The 30 x 30 exhibition asks Project members to create a piece of art within the specified dimensions.
Ms Zahorodny said it is important to keep Project alive so that Wollongong doesn’t lose the artistic element of its culture.
The event will include free food and drinks and tickets are available at Project Contemporary Artspace or West Wollongong TAFE shop.
Local band Fast Falling Fortunes will be playing on the night and members of Circus WOW will be putting on a performance.
Both groups of entertainers agreed to perform at the event for free.
