ULTRA-marathon runner Dave Taylor has marked the handover of cheques from his seven-day, 650km charity treadmill run by announcing an annual relay from Goulburn Policy Academy to Coledale.
The run will highlight Mr Taylor’s two favoured charities: Police Legacy and the National Breast Cancer Association, which he has been drawn to since the death of marathon gold medallist and friend Kerryn McCann late last year.
“The run will end at Kerryn’s park at Coledale,” Mr Taylor said, referring to St James Park where a memorial to Ms McCann was installed in October.
The 100km event will carry the same theme as Mr Taylor’s treadmill run, Gone but not Forgotten, and will raise funds for the same two charities.
Runners will complete the course in relays of 5km each.
Last week Mr Taylor donated more than $35,000 to several charities, including $16,600 each to the Breast Cancer Foundation and Police Legacy; $1000 to Dr Margaret Gardiner and $1500 each to Wollongong, Bulli and Warilla PCYCs. Wests Illawarra, where the marathon run was held, also donated $10,000.
Robin Gregory of the Breast Cancer Foundation said the money would be used in a variety of programs, including distributing a kit to newly diagnosed breast cancer sufferers in rural areas.
Ms McCann’s father, John Hindmarsh, accepted the cheque on behalf of the charity and said his daughter was an “unbelievable lady”. “She used to say ‘all you’ve got to do is do your best’, she was a great ambassador,” Mr Hindmarsh said.
