THE AUSTRALIA Day Aquathon has been hailed an outstanding success by organisers after a record field of 1000 entered the event’s tenth instalment.
Competitors from the Illawarra, regional NSW, interstate and overseas competed in the event.
More than 500 individual competitors, 150 teams and 300 juniors contested the event, based around Belmore Basin.
Event director Rob Battocchio attributed the record turnout to the region embracing the event.
“Wollongong is starting to embrace the event as a unique way to celebrate Australia Day and the range of events – individuals and corporate and family teams – makes it an appealing event,” he said.
“There was a carnival atmosphere and there was just an awesome vibe.”
Although some elite athletes contested the aquathon, the majority of entrants were fitness enthusiasts, Mr Battocchio said.
“We had amazing weather and the location is so picturesque – the location is safe.”
More than 3000 people flocked to the precinct to observe the event, while $7000 was raised for various charities and not-for-profit organisations.
Thirroul’s Paul Wiedersehn won the men’s long course event and Malaysia’s Kimberly Yap won the women’s long course title.
Nurtri-Grain series ironman Drew Cairncross won the men’s short course while Grace Musgrove won the women’s division. Jack Miller won the mini course while Briella Bropwn was the first girl across the line.
The Altitude Fitness team won the long course title.
