VOLUNTEERS from the north's 12 surf clubs are set for another long hot summer. NSW Minister for Sport and Recreation Sandra Nori officially launched the 2006/07 NSW volunteer surf patrol season on Saturday. This season is one of celebration for the surf lifesaving movement, with 100 years of service being celebrated as part of the official Year of the Surf Lifesaver in 2007. Last year 6,319 lives were saved at the beach thanks to volunteer surf lifesavers in NSW, while almost 60,000 members were registered to the movement in 2005/06. Our picture shows volunteers from various northern surf clubs at North Wollongong Beach during the launch. The Northern Leader's popular surfing column, Among the Breakers, also returns for another season on page 30 of this week's issue.
