Teenagers and young adults with disabilities were given a chance to take in a professional musical theatre show last week.
The teenagers and young adults are clients of Essential Personnel’s Community Participation Program for people with special needs and were invited to attend a musical theatre version of Footloose put on by The Illawarra Grammar School.
Cathy Potter from Essential Personnel said she tries to take some of her clients to see shows on weekends, but can only manage to take about six at a time and said for the young people in her care being able to go to a big show like that doesn’t happen very often.
“They were so pumped about it – they get so worked up,” she said.
“They’ll be talking about that for weeks to come.”
The Community Participation Program runs from a house in Balgownie, and teaches people with a range of disabilities life skills such as cooking, budgeting and gardening.
There are about 22 clients in the program at the moment.
Ms Potter said the clients adore going to shows like the version of Footloose they saw last week.
The Footloose musical is based heavily on the 1985 movie of the same name.
