Stanwell Park Ocean Challenge
March 27, 2009
Section: Sport
Last year’s record 281 swimmers was shattered this year when 462 swimmers took to the water on Sunday, March 22, for the Stanwell Park Ocean Challenge.
The challenge truly lived up to its name with a headwind and southerly current testing swimmers and their times, which were much slower than in previous years.
Nevertheless, the swimmers truly enjoyed the swim, the casual way in which the event is conducted, the hospitality shown by the surf clubs, the fresh fruit at the end of the swim and even the bus ride from Stanwell Park surf club to the start line at Coalcliff surf club – a great advertisement for our area.
Lifesavers from Stanwell Park, Coalcliff and other Illawarra surf clubs as well jet skies and rescue crafts, the police launch and the Junior Ladies boat crew from Stanwell Park plus a fly over by the Aerial Patrol assured swimmers they were in safe hands all the way.
Without the support of Helensburgh businesses and other sponsors, this ever-growing event would not be possible.
First male and overall winner was Joshua Hill in a time of 36mins 02 secs and first female home was Louise Stevenson in 36.27.
