ILLAWARRA RUGBY UNION

SCOTT McKELLAR

SHAMROCKS demonstrated yet again that they are real Illawarra Rugby Union premiership contenders with an emphatic come from behind victory over third-placed Shoalhaven.

The Ocean Park-based club were stunned early in the match with the Shoalhaven side running in two quick tries to set up a 10-nil lead.

Further tries were added from both sides but it was Shoalhaven in a commanding position going to the half time break leading 22-15.

The half time talk from Shamrocks coach Brendon Schoupp encouraged a no-panic approach from his side in the second stanza.

Shamrocks also aimed to step up the intensity at the set piece.

The approach worked as the Shamrocks had levelled the score midway through the second term.

Shoalhaven pulled away with another try to lead by five points with twenty minutes remaining.

Shamrocks, like they have done so many times this season, lifted the intensity all over the park and dominated their opposition to score another three tries to win the match 41-27.

The win leaves Shamrocks undefeated on the top of the competition ladder with five rounds remaining.

In second grade, the top of the table clash between Shamrocks and Shoalhaven lived up to expectations with the hosts holding out to score a narrow 24-20 victory.

Next weekend the Shamrocks are away to Avondale in first and second grade, and Wollondilly in third grade.

First grade kick-off is 3pm at Dandaloo Oval, Kanahooka.

In other IRU matches on Saturday, Tech Waratahs led early before going down to second-placed Kiama 38-24.

Avondale maintained their top-three spot with a 31-17 win over Vikings, while Camden were too good for defending premiers University, winning 38-19.

Next weekend Tech Waratahs meet Vikings at Saunders Oval, Kiama are away to Bowral and Shoalies host Camden. Uni have the bye.

The first grade points table is: Shamrocks 55, Kiama 48, Avondale 40, Shoalhaven 38, University 33, Camden 21, Tech Waratahs 18, Bowral 6, Vikings 6.
