SEWAGE overflows at East Corrimal should be a thing of the past with the completion of a new $1.4 million pumping station.
Sydney Water will begin work this month on a new wet weather sewage pumping station near Corrimal Surf Club to improve the local sewerage system Minister for Water Utilities and the Illawarra announced on Friday.
Sydney Water held a community meeting in September last year to discuss concerns over sewage overflows in the area.
"The current sewerage network is not large enough to cope with the volume of stormwater that enters the system when it rains for several days.
"The wet weather sewage pumping station will increase the system's capacity by delaying the entry of storm flows into the system and by bypassing the existing bottleneck.
"Additional pipes will be laid to enable wastewater flows to be pumped into the local pipe network," Mr Campbell said.
The pumping station will be constructed off Lake Pde on land owned by Wollongong City Council and will only operate in wet weather. The site will be landscape once construction is completed.
Mr Campbell said the project would improve the reliability of the sewerage network as well as reduce the impacts on public health and the environment.
Construction should take six months to complete. For further information, residents can phone 9644 0306 or email sewerfix@sydneywater.com.au
