RHETT PUTS IN THE HARD YARDS

Thirroul's Rhett Russel is one of our many locals who excelled at the recent state titles.
Faced with a gruelling schedule in his U19 age group, the 18year-old Wombarra resident won two silver medals in the ironman and board rescue (with Josh Minogue) and was placed fourth and fifth in the board and ski races respectively. Each event began with about 60 to 70 competitors and were then reduced to a final of 14 through an exhausting series of heats, quarter and semi finals enough to make Superman take a breather. Rhett deserves all the success that comes his way. He swim trains four to five mornings and ski and board trains almost every afternoon. Add doing voluntary patrols at Thirroul beach and spending time helping to train up and coming lifesavers at nipper clinics, it's easy to see why he so dedicated to a sport, that once it gets hold of you, it's hard to let go. And he wouldn't have it any other way.
