Signalling the end of winter and the countdown to summer, the region’s patrolled beaches are now open.

On Saturday the red and yellow flags were raised on patrolled beaches from Stanwell Park in the north to Shellharbour in the south, marking the start of the 2008/2009 summer swimming season.

Illawarra Life Saving Director, Gerald Davies called for beachgoers to swim at patrolled beaches under the watchful eyes of the life savers and life guards.

“It is imperative that beachgoers swim between the red and yellow flags and obey the signs on the beach,” he said.

“Drownings from not following this request are preventable and Surf Life Saving’s target is for zero preventable drownings this swimming season.”

Wollongong City Council Lifeguards will conduct daily patrols on local beaches throughout the season, complemented by Volunteer Surf Lifesaver patrols on Sundays and Public Holidays.

All eight of Council’s outdoor pools will also open between 6am and 6pm daily until October 31, when the opening hours will be extended to 7pm.
