IT is well known that people who fight wars together form a special kind of bond- so perhaps the same is true for Year 12 students battling through the stress of this year's HSC.

With the trial exams just over and the real HSC fast approaching, Wollongong High School student Lauren Parker said the separate peer groups formed in junior years have been broken down under the pressure of the important exams.

"Everyone is so much more friendly now because we're all going through the same thing," she said.

Lauren and classmate Harriet Stringer said the stress definitely gets to people around exam time, with outbreaks of crying not uncommon amongst the senior girls.

Both Lauren and Harriet are hoping for the lofty UAI of 89. Their reason for the seemingly random number is a psychological one.

"It's less than 90 so it's not like a scary thing, but it's still high," Harriet said. Lauren and Harriet are both thinking of becoming teachers.
