BLASTING beats echoed off the walls of Fairy Meadow Demonstration School last week.

Rising drumming star Alex Barker treated a group of youngsters to a special workshop as part of a new initiative from Illawarra Children's Services.

The Wollongong Conservatorium of Music student belted out a few tunes, before allowing the kids from Fairy Meadow Vacation Care to step behind the drum kit.

The program is aimed to inspire and engage children aged five to 12 in the arts and provide opportunities for young adults who have completed their HSC.

"Children this age really look up to young adults," coordinator Jennine Primmer said.

"It really helps the children to see people they admire setting and achieving creative goals and it builds confidence on both sides."

Jennine said Illawarra Children's Services hoped to expand the program in the future.
