Fairy Meadow big winner in development of new university campus

THE start of construction on the University of Wollongong's $300 million Innovation Campus heralds a new and exciting era for the Illawarra.

Commercial agreements are being negotiated and a total of 12 companies are expected to move to the new 33ha site at Fairy Meadow when completed.

The campus will feature a four-star hotel and university facilities, and is expected to generate up to 5000 knowledge-based jobs.

Work began last month on the first of four buildings costing more than $100 million that form stage one of the development.

Due for completion in early 2008, iC Central will provide office and meeting space as well as caf?s, retail space, recreation and health facilities, and function rooms.

A joint venture between the university and developer Baulderstone Hornibrook, the Innovation Campus will include more than 20 major buildings to be built over 10 to 15 years.

Fairy Meadow should be a big winner when the campus is completed, with the spin offs enormous.
