MORE 600 junior surf lifesavers flocked to Wollongong City Beach on Saturday for the McDonald’s Illawarra Junior Carnival.

The carnival marked two milestones – the centenary of the surf life saving movement and McDonald’s 30 years sponsorship of Surf Life Saving Illawarra.

The Illawarra 2008 Junior Lifesavers of the Year, Madeline Green (North Wollongong) and Beau Wheeler (Bulli) received their awards during the carnival.

Their awards recognised their respective contributions to lifesaving and leadership within their clubs and the community.

According to David Briggs, President of Surf Lifesaving Illawarra, the McDonald’s Carnival attracted more than 600 competitors who competed in 150 events throughout the day.

“The McDonald’s Carnival is second largest junior surf lifesaving carnival in New South Wales,” Mr Briggs said.

“Competitors came from the Illawarra and South Coast regions and some participants travelled from Cronulla and Sydney’s Northern Beaches.”

McDonald’s is proud to support sports in the Illawarra and encouraged children to live active and healthy lifestyles.

“These young nippers are our future lifesavers and could one day save a local life at our local beaches so I encourage everyone to come down and support the nippers,” McDonalds franchisee Katia Dwarte said.
