CONCERNS about the construction of a $4.5 million family restaurant in Fairy Meadow have been raised, as the development application enters into the assessment process with Wollongong Council.

If accepted, the proposal lodged by Ralph Chiaverini, who owns the land, will result in the demolition of all existing buildings from 487-491 Princes Highway Fairy Meadow, the area in which Domino's Pizza and surrounding businesses now stand.

Several residential dwellings will also be demolished to make way for a single-storey restaurant, complete with underground staff parking, children's playground, stage for live entertainment and big screen televisions to play music, videos and sport.

Neighbourly Committee Number Four's Valerie Hussain, who lives near the proposed site, said a significant number of nearby residents had objected to the development, primarily because of concerns about an increase in noise and traffic that the restaurant might bring.

These residents also feel that the proposal was poorly advertised by the council. Many residents also felt that calling the proposed establishment a restaurant was misleading.

"The biggest point is that it was advertised as a family restaurant when in fact it is a nightclub," Ms Hussain said.
