Volunteers from the Otford Bush Fire Brigade celebrate the arrival of their new tanker with Emergency Services Minister Tony Kelly, Heathcote MP Paul McLeay and Rural Fire Service Commissioner Phil Koperberg.
OTFORD Bush Fire Brigade has received a major boost ahead of this year's official bush fire season.
Volunteers were presented with a new bush fire tanker on Saturday from Emergency Services Minister Tony Kelly, Heathcote MP Paul McLeay and Rural Fire Service Commissioner Phil Koperberg.
The tanker arrived just as firefighters prepare to face another potentially long and severe bushfire period this summer.
Mr Koperberg said a number of fires had already struck in parts of northern NSW before the official start of the bush fire season on October 1.
"Experts are predicting a possible El Nino and more extreme fire danger days," he said.
"This new tanker will significantly boost the Otford brigades' capacity to respond to fire and protect not only their own community but other communities in NSW and even interstate."
The heavy firefighting vehicle is designed to carry between 3000 litres and 4000 litres of water, with up to six firefighters and firefighting equipment also on board.
Mr McLeay said the tanker would aid the front line response to bush fires across Wollongong, especially in the northern suburbs.
"The proximity of housing so close to bushland makes it vital that we have the best possible equipment to help our firefighters battle fires," he said.
"The new vehicle will improve fire fighting capabilities in the district, particularly in rugged terrain."
Mr McLeay paid tribute to the volunteer firefighters for their ongoing commitment and dedication to protecting their local community from fires and other emergencies.
"The community owe a special debt of gratitude to the RFS volunteers," he said.
"Volunteers regularly place themselves in danger to protect our lives and property."
