RECREATION Illawarra recently received sponsorship for its Jammers basketball program from Credit Union Australia.
The Jammers program a service of The Disability Trust has operated since 1993 and has 48 participants attending on a weekly basis.
The program provides people with disabilities in the Illawarra the chance to learn basketball skills and play.
Over the years the Jammers have been showing their skills at Wollongong Hawks home games and this has generated great interest in the program.
This has meant the program outgrew it ability to cater to all those who wanted to attend.
Sponsorship from CUA has allowed Recreation Illawarra to reduce its waiting list and provide the program to all those who wish to attend.
“The CUA sponsorship is a great opportunity for the Jammers to develop even further,” Recreation Illawarra After School Programs manager Michael Norris said.
“We have over 45 participants attending program and we are now able to open the program up more participants who would like to join.
“It is great to see an organisation such as CUA supporting the local disability community and The Disability Trust.
“We hope this sponsorship will encourage other local businesses to come on board and support people with disabilities to access sport and recreational programs in the local community.
Credit Union Australia CEO Graham Olrich said the sponsorship was part of the company’s involvement in the community.
“Credit Union Australia is delighted to be able to continue our support within the Illawarra community,” he said.
If any other local businesses are interested in sponsoring any Recreation Illawarra programs please contact Michael Norris or Ryan Kiddle at The Disability Trust on 4255 8000.
