WARREN JONES
ERIC Wilkinson admits that after his wife of more than 60 years passed away five years ago, he slipped into depression for several months.

Mr Wilkinson managed to pull himself out of the slump and made an effort to live his life, and knows how important it is to remain active and connected in the community.

Earlier this year Mr Wilkinson joined a new group called the Men's Shed, run by Wollongong City Council and staffed by volunteers who support elderly (65 and over) and disabled men as they meet to socialise and create once a week.

At 87 Mr Wilkinson is the group's oldest member, and decided to join up for the company and the joy of making things with his hands.

The Men's Shed has been running for several months already from the back shed of South Coast Home Modification and Maintenance Service in Wollongong, but was only officially launched this week, with interested men encouraged to get involved.

Wollongong City Council says there is a gap in services to men over 65 or with a disability, with many facing issues meaning they are in for a significant life change.

The Men's Shed is aimed at helping these men connect with the community and each other, while teaching them new skills and addressing men's health and social issues.

So far this year, the eight men, with the help of four knowledgeable volunteers have created a fleet of child's doll cots, which they decided to donate to the Lord Mayor’s Giving Tree, to brighten the Christmas of some less fortunate local children.

Mr Wilkinson, who used to work for a credit union, said he enjoys using his hands and seeing what he has built.

“You've created something,” he said.

“When we get them together then paint them you can see what we've done.”
