The Spring into Corrimal festival has new organisers and will have a new, greener, more festival-like feel in years to come, according to Access Community Group (ACG).
ACG took the reins of the festival from Apex this year and plans to build on the strong foundations laid by previous organisers to make the event even more community focused.
ACG CEO Samantha Hill said new additions to this year’s Spring into Corrimal would include street performers and a focus on recycling. “What we want to do is create a festivale kind of feel to include a lot of things like street performance,” she said.
“It’s going to be a water-wise event, which is different to the last few years and we want to include some second-hand markets.”
ACG Program Development manager Larissa Daniel said the idea was to make the festival a community-owned event, rather than something put on by ACG that the community just showed up at.
“We want to develop it and we want to make the people of Corrimal own it so it’s not ACG owning it, it’s the people putting it on,” she said.
Ms Daniel said feedback from this year’s festival would be used to create a map of the assets of Corrimal, to be used in future festivals.
Ms Hill said that as well as the usual fun stalls and things to do, there were plans for this year’s festival to include information stalls from service providers in the area, giving people a chance to connect to services they might need but weren’t aware of previously.
Ms Daniel said she would like to see Spring into Corrimal 2009 as an event that includes all of the diverse sections of the Corrimal community.
Both women wanted to stress that Apex had done a great job with the festival in its stint as organisers.
They said they weren’t trying to change the festival completely, but rather would try to keep it as a community owned event.
