Magpie skipper ‘Sheppards’ his side to big win

CHRIS Sheppard hammered the first hundred of 2007-08 as Balgownie cruised past Wests at Figtree Oval.
Sheppard hit 131 not out and figured in an unbeaten, 170-run, fourth-wicket stand with Joel Brockley (57 not out) as Balgownie scored a seven-wicket win after being in some early trouble at 2/4.
As it panned out, Luke Boncompagni (2/45) was the only Wests bowler to claim a wicket as Bally reached their target.
Batting first, Wests posted a competitive total of 9/217, led by 72 from Philip Warren, 37 from Dan Hutt and 26 from Nathan Dodds.
Sheppard was also Balgownie’s start with the ball, claiming 4/34 while Jamie Fleming (3/39) and Josh Faulks (2/32) also bowled well.
Northern Districts had a promising start to their campaign with a 63-run win over Port Kembla at King George Oval.
Batting first, Norths rattled up an imposing 5/263, led by 68 from Matt Salakas and 63 from Steve Brooks.
The duo combined for a 118-run, third-wicket stand after openers Tim McKenzie (24) and Scott Beckett (41) provided a sturdy platform.
Brad Clare (2/43) was the only multiple wicket-taker for the battered Port attack.
In reply Port scored 200, led by 82 from Matt Skora, 26 from Steve Sunderland and 24 from Jason Fulton.
Tim McKenzie (3/46), Steve Brooks (2/29) and Mark Doig (2/0) were the multiple wicket-takers for Norths.
Dapto started their campaign with a 39-run win over Keira at Keira Oval.
Batting first, Dapto racked up 8/223, led by 63 from Richard Marsh, who was supported by Brad Young (28), Aaron Hickson (40) and Greg Jones (32).
Nicky Bell (3/35) was the pick of Keira’s bowlers while John Cheadle (2/48) provided support.
Keira could only muster 184 in reply, led by 54 from Chris Hamer and 44 from Josh Lehane.
Adrian O’Donnell spearheaded the Dapto attack with 4/45 while Scott Cox (3/25) and Tommi Bozinovski (2/48) were also amongst the wickets.
Another round of one-day matches will be held this Saturday, with Northern Districts hosting Wollongong at Hollymount Park East.
Keira will lokk to make amends with another home match at Keira Oval, this time against Port Kembla.
Helensburgh will look to score their first win when they host Dapto at Helensburgh Oval.
Balgownie will face a stiff test when they host Uni at Judy Masters Park while Corrimal will play Wests at Zeims Park.
