Teenager Max Winters is given a hand by Helensburgh Lions Club representative, Helen McGuir. The Lions donated $500 towards sending the talented musician to Japan to participate in a musical festival.

MAX Winters is brushing-up on some basic Japanese in readiness for a trip of a lifetime.

The 13-year-old Helensburgh musician is busy doing odd jobs and saving his pocket money after an invitation to play in a flute ensemble with the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music in Kawaguchi Japan in July.

Max's mum, Julie said the family's budget was a "little stretched" at the moment, as her husband Ross had been off work for several weeks due to sickness.

"We don't want hand-outs, so Max has been busking, washing cars and doing other odd jobs to try and raise money towards the $2,400 needed for accommodation and airfares," Mrs Winters said.

Recently the Metropolitan Colliery at Helensburgh, the CFMEU, mining and energy division and the Helensburgh Lions Club came to the rescue with each donating $500 towards Max's trip.

He will be one of a group of 12 to 9 year olds, from the conservatorium of music, to participate in the Japanese musical festival.
