Player of the Carnival, John Green.
THE 48th South Pacific Lawn Bowls Carnival at Towradgi Park proved beyond doubt to be one of the best on record and was capped off when host club member Tom Ellem won the blueribbon singles event by defeating Shaun Parnis (Wollongong RSL) 31 26 in the final.
Played in windy conditions, the 32 yearold Ellem, trailed 21 14, but a change of tactics saw the club's bowls coordinator storm home and claim the title.
"This victory meant a lot to me in front of so many of my fellow club members," the international lawn bowler said.
Another local bowler John Green from Corrimal was rewarded for his efforts by being named "Player of the Carnival" after he won the pairs' event with Matt Sargeant (Roselands) and was runnerup in the fours.
In the pairs final, play was called to a halt when the opposing composite side of Nigel Gell and Pedro Rudd decided to call it a day when trailing 22 1.
The shock of the three finals came in the fours' where the composite side of Pat Duke (Nowra), Rod Loosemore, Dennis Skinner and Ryan Loosemore (all Greenwell Point) beat the hot favourites Chris Green and Brody Pitham (Taren Point). Sargeant and Green 24 17.
Carnival organiser Norm Chant was high in praise by the efforts produced by the seaside club in making the carnival such a resounding success.
