WOONONA surfer Jack Hobbs, a member of the local board riders, is making a rapid charge up the surfing ladder.

The 14-year-old recently contested both the under 15s and under 18s at the Save Sandon Point surfing festival held over the long weekend and was awarded runner-up in both divisions.

Strong power surfing with two tube rides and critical manoeuvres saw judges grant Jack the maximum 10 point wave score, one of the only two ten-point rides awarded for the entire event.

Contestants shredded the 8 to 10 foot, clean-faced long barrelling waves fanned by off shore winds, with the local fraternity saying they were the best waves in many years.

Organised by local identity Jason Gava the community came out in force to witness the highly spectacular and successful surfing event aiming to have Sandon Point headland declared a surfing reserve.

In August Jack will travel to the Central Coast to represent the Illawarra region at the State surfing titles.
