NORTHERN suburbs residents have been warned to thoroughly wash their hands, following reports of viral gastroenteritis in the community.
South Eastern Sydney Illawarra Health Director of Public Health Associate Professor Mark Ferson said there had been a number of cases of Norovirus which causes viral gastroenteritis reported in the northern suburbs recently.
Norovirus is a common infection that results in vomiting and diarrhoea, is highly infectious and is spread by vomit or faeces of an infected person through person-to-person contact such as shaking hands or contaminated surfaces contaminated food or drink.
People with minor symptoms should rest and drink lots of water, while those with severe symptoms should see their doctor, Prof Ferson said.
