The Illawarra Labor party completed a clean sweep of the Illawarra on the weekend with all candidates polling better than initially predicted. Noreen Hay (pictured at the polling booths on Saturday) was re-elected with a massive 13 percent increase.
LABOR'S powerful win in the State Election was convincingly reflected in the Illawarra on Saturday.
Member for Keira David Campbell and Member for Wollongong Noreen Hay were re-elected on Saturday by increased margins.
“I always take it as (a reminder that) the responsibility now rests with me to deliver for people who’ve shown that confidence in me,” Mr Campbell said.
“I’m happy with the win, but that comes with responsibility.
“I think it’s a reflection of the fact that I listen to what people in the electorate of Keira have got to say and I work to deliver for the people of Keira for four years – I don’t just bob up before the election.”
Mr Campbell said he intended to put himself forward for the position again in four years.
“This is a job where you clear the bar and then the bar’s set a bit higher. That’s the challenge of it,” he said.
Mr Campbell received 58 percent of the electorate’s votes on Saturday while his closest competitor, Liberal David Moulds, lagged well behind, gaining only 20 percent of the region’s votes.
Noreen Hay’s victory in the seat of Wollongong was even more convincing than Mr Campbell’s.
Ms Hay received 60 percent of the votes for her electorate, a 13 percent increase on last election.
Again, the closest contender was the Liberal candidate, who received a humble 16 percent of the votes.
“I’d like to say thank you very much for having faith in me and having trust,” Ms Hay said.
“I want to see the City of Wollongong thrive as a major city.”
Labor Candidate for Heathcote Paul McLeay was re-elected by a smaller margin than Mr Campbell and Mrs Hay, beating the Liberal Candidate for his electorate by 11 percent.
