Food Fairness Illawarra is holding an event featuring popular nutritionist Dr Rosemary Stanton, to discuss building a sustainable, fair food system in the Illawarra.
The event, linked to the upcoming NSW Food Summit, will also discuss why many people struggle to find enough good to eat, while food makes up the majority of waste thrown away.
Food waste makes up 38% of the average garbage bin, with Australians sending $5 billion worth of uneaten food to landfill every year.
Food waste in landfill produces greenhouse gas emissions, causes leaching, and is of great concern to regional councils.
However, evidence suggests a growing number of people struggle to access enough healthy food to eat.
About 6.8% of people in the Illawarra suffer this form of ‘food insecurity’.
Local producers, gardeners, retailers, planners, health practitioners, sustainability officers, community workers and food aid providers will be attending the event.
The Hungry for Change summit will begin at 9am on Wednesday, July 1 at the University of Wollongong.
