RESIDENTS of Wollongong's Northern Suburbs are suffering under the costs of providing shelter for themselves and their families, the St Vincent de Paul's Society Diocesan President for Wollongong has said.

Diocesan President Mr Ivor Davies said demand was so high, and homelessness such an issue that the charity was often forced to turn people away.

"Local people in the Northern Suburbs are suffering from high accommodation costs and there has been great demand for warm clothing and blankets," Mr Davies said.

"Of great concern is homelessness, as our facilities are always stretched with many having to be turned away."

Mr Ivor said the services provided by St Vincent's depend largely on donations.

August 18-26 is the St Vincent's annual Doorknock Appeal, and all residents have been invited by the St Vincent's de Paul Society of Wollongong to offer three hours of their time in that week to help collect money to help St Vincent's support those in need.
