MANY children spend all term looking forward to the school holidays, but for parents it can mean a lot more work during the day.

The school holidays don't have to be a time of stress though, and to prove it the Department of Community Services (DoCS) has released an online parents kits of ideas for school holiday activities.

DoCS Southern Region director Jill Herberte said the kit includes tips on everything from dealing with holiday stress to monitoring time spent in front of the computer and television.

"I think sometimes you need to get some input into some ideas and you need to know that what you doing is right; it's about giving parents confidence," she said.

"One of the most important things to remember when entertaining children is often what your children want most is to spend time with you."

Wollongong Council is also supporting a number of school holiday activity centres across the city. This week Mad Hatter's Greenhouse Parties were held at the Discovery Centre at Wollongong Botanical Gardens. There are two more planned this week, on April 19 and 20. Cost is $5 per child or $12 a family. For details call 4229 2600.

Local libraries are also doing their bit for the kids as the holidays draw to a close, holding free face painting and drop in craft sessions on April 19 at Corrimal Library and the following day at Wollongong Central Library.
