Hockey hosts upstaged at titles

IT WAS a tough weekend for the locals at the NSW under 17 Indoor Hockey Titles at Unanderra on the weekend The South Coast finished third in Division 1 after two draws and one win and one loss. They opened their campaign with a 2-1 loss to eventual champions Campbelltown before bouncing back with a 3-2 win over Crookwell. Stalemates against Macarthur (2-all) and Sydney (3-all) ended South Coast’s hopes of winning the title. Illawarra also struggled, recording one draw from four matches in Division 2. The hosts opened their campaign with a 4-1 loss to eventual champions Bathurst before a 6-1 defeat against Highlands. Illawarra regained some pride with a 2-all draw against North Shore but their championships ended with a 3-1 loss to Western Districts. Meanwhile, Hockey NSW has announced its sides for an under 16 indoor invitational tournament to be held at Unanderra from January 2-6, 2008. Kiama’s Sarah Paterson will join Illawarra products Rachel Cheetham (Figtree), Kizziah Plumb and Pippen Saunders in the under 16 girls team. Local players in the ‘Blues’ team include Vicki Cowan, Kate Davis, Brogan Ford, Monique Isemonger, Shelby Makin and Kate McKinlay. Local players feature prominently in the boys team. Nathan Nikolich, Brenton Osbourne, Owen Bunt, Scott Govers and Mathew Harris have been selected.
