CRICKET ILLAWARRA
A BLAZING century by Dapto’s Aaron Hickson and seven wickets from Balgownie’s Jamie Fleming have provided the highlights of the latest round of the Cricket Illawarra first grade competition.
Resuming at 2-59 against Wollongong, Hickson blazed an unbeaten 136 and Richard Marsh 70 as the Canaries declared at 6-261, with Jason Welsh starring for the ‘Gong with 5-56.
Wollongong looked to be holding on comfortably in their second innings when they reached 2/83, but a dramatic crash, sparked by three wickets apiece from Kyle Connor and Greg Wray led to a collapse where they lost 7-22 and finished the day at 9/105.
Keira remain unbeaten after downing former leaders Port Kembla at King George XI Oval.
Chasing Keira’s 218, Port looked comfortable at 4-104, but lost 3-0 to ruin any chance of overhauling Keira, with Graeme Batty (4-24) and Nick Bell (3-37) the destroyers as Port fell for 142.
Bally spinner Jamie Fleming was the chief destroyer as his side wrapped up an outright win over the struggling Northern Districts.
Innings scores of just 125 and 105 proved the achilles heel for the Districts and they must find batting form soon or face the dreaded wooden-spoon.
Wests turned in their best performance of the season to down Helensburgh in an excellent game.
Chasing Wests 219, ‘Burgh skipper Andrew Northbridge and Ryan Mulally batted solidly, but it was Luke Boncomagni’s 4-31 that turned the tide for Wests.
