DESPITE huge community protest and thousands of objections Wollongong City Council on Monday decided to proceed with plans to sell off Thirroul parkland to developer Stockland.
In a close vote, councillors decided to endorse a proposal to exhibit plans to rezone part of Thomas Gibson Park to allow the developer to build a road into the proposed Sandon Point residential site. Ward One councillors David Martin and Alice Cartan are critical of the plan to rezone part of the park from community land to operational land to allow for the road saying it would create traffic chaos at the intersection of Wrexham Rd and Lawrence Hargrave Drive.
A rescission motion is expected to be lodged.
