Fete to play a part in fun this Saturday

Some school fetes consist of little more than a bucket of wet sponges, two cake stalls and a fairy floss machine – but that’s nowhere near good enough for Waniora Public School.
Fireworks, laser fights, live music, a clairvoyant, rides, animals, prizes, gourmet food and a performing dog are just the icing on the cake at this well-feted spectacular, which has been a year in the planning.
The money raised at the event will go towards buying the school more computers.
At the moment there aren’t enough computers for one class to have a computer each for a lesson, so students are forced to go three-to-a-screen and take it in turns to learn important computer skills.
Event coordinator Audra Tuckwood organised the school’s last fete in 2006, which, much to the disappointment of those involved, fell on a horribly drizzly day.
With so much effort and time going into the 2008 event Ms Tuckwood was determined not to let that happen again, and last year, as the first step towards Family Fun Day 2008, went to the next best thing to God in reading the mind of the weather.
“I actually got onto the weather bureau first of all and I said ‘what’s a dry month,’” she said.
“They were fantastic – they actually sent me back choices of a couple of weeks.”
The weekend will show how right they were, and in the meantime it’s all systems go for this extravaganza of entertainment and good old-fashioned fete-style fun.
Businesses with family at Waniora Public were approached as major sponsors for the event and surprised organisers with their generosity.
Bulli Plumbing’s whopping $1500 donation let the school pay for a fireworks display to take place at the end of the fete at 6.30pm.
The generosity of smaller local businesses has ensured there are a truckload of prizes to give away in raffles throughout the day.
The Fete Committee hopes to bring in around $30,000 profit from the event.
The fete will run from 2pm to 7pm this Saturday, May 24 at the school on Ursula Road, Bulli.
