Reports have told of how a car crash in Corrimal toppled a large palm tree nearly on top of a young family near Corrimal Public School last Friday.
At 10.50am a 52-year-old Corrimal woman was driving her car south along Wilga Street when, for reasons unknown, she crossed to the wrong side of the road and crashed head-on with an unoccupied van parked on the opposite side of the road.
The van was pushed into the middle of the road, but the woman’s sedan continued, knocking a large palm tree across the footpath.
One nearby resident, who came running at the sound of the crash, said a woman and two young children were walking down the footpath only a few metres from where the tree fell at the time of the crash.
Witnesses said the woman remained conscious while a neighbour and passer-by spoke to her to keep her awake until an ambulance arrived.
Police said the woman had a fractured sternum. She had not appeared to have been intoxicated.
They are investigating if there are any medical conditions that could have contributed to the crash.
