WOLLONGONG City Council has agreed to explore a new civic and cultural facility for the city's heart.

After lengthy debate, Councillors resolved to investigate options for the new multi-million dollar centre, including a new town hall, regional gallery and Illawarra Performing Arts Centre at Monday night's meeting.

The proposal would mean the demolition of the present art gallery, which was the original Wollongong City council chambers and the adjacent town hall.

At the same time, Council also voted to further investigate the feasibility of keeping the existing Town Hall, and noted a previous Council resolution that the Town Hall's pipe organ be retained.

The proposal also includes provision for underground car parking, residential and retail development, as well as the possibility of new premises for Council's administration.
