Both last year’s Illawarra Carlton League grand finalists suffered shock second round defeats over the weekend, leaving Corrimal and Thirroul as the only remaining undefeated sides.
Corrimal kept their impressive start to the season rolling with a 26-10 drubbing of a hapless canaries side on Friday night at Ziems Park.
Running in five tries to two, Corrimal ensured Dapto were never in the hunt, with the Cougars forwards dominating their more fancied rivals.
Coming off the back of a 30-0 victory over a Dragons induced Helensburgh side, Thirroul continued their stellar early season form with an impressive 26-16 victory over the reigning premiers Collegians at WIN Stadium on Saturday.
Despite both sides scoring three tries each, Thirroul’s goal kicking proved the difference with five-eighth Aaron Beath landing four goals and second rowers Ryan Powell one.
Two late tries helped Wollongong-university Bulls snatch a 22-22 draw with Helensburgh.
Dragons backrower grabbed two to of his four sides tries but that was not enough to hold off a fast finishing Bulls side.
The draw meant both sides are still yet to post a victory this season after both teams suffered first round defeats.
Meanwhile Berkely continued the weekend of odd score lines after they defeated Wests in a hard fought 14-8 victory.
Coming off the back of a hiding from Collegians in the first round, Berkely put in a much more committed showing this week, shocking the highly fancied West’s team.
Thirroul and Corrimal are sitting on top of the Illawarra Carlton League table after two rounds with Collegians, Wests and Berkeley all in equal third spot.
Thirroul are also aloft at the head of the reserve grade table with Wollongong-University and Dapto with Collies and Wests closely behind while Corrimal and thirroul remain the only undefeated sides in the under 18’s competition heading in to round three.
