Ken Holloway is fighting to save the Corrimal Chamber of Commerce.

LESS than a year after rising from the ashes, Corrimal Chamber of Commerce is again in danger of falling apart.

A group of local business owners reestablished the chamber last July after a four-year recession.

Members have since recommenced monthly meetings, developed an official website and provided a voice for the local business community over controversial issues such as Stockland's proposed development at Ziems Park.

Despite this progress, chamber president Ken Holloway said the chamber could not continue without a significant boost in membership.

Mr Holloway estimated there were over 500 potential members between Fairy Meadow and Russell Vale, yet the chamber included little more than 30 business owners.

"The chamber is only as strong as its membership base," he said.

"If the broader business community are not interested in supporting the chamber, we would have to reassess our position for next year."

At its peak a decade ago, the Corrimal Chamber of Commerce included 120 financial members in Corrimal alone.

Mr Holloway said he hoped to see the current membership increase to over 50 by the chamber's AGM on July 24.

A survey of local businesses was conducted earlier this month.

With a large number of new businesses in Corrimal, Mr Holloway said many people were unaware of the chamber and its activities.

He said a simple invitation might be all that is required to attract new members.

If the membership drive fails, Mr Holloway said business owners would lose an important conduit into Wollongong City Council at a time when major developments such as the Stockland proposal are on the agenda.

"We need a voice in the debate otherwise we will be left behind," he said.

"If these new ventures go forward, the existing business community will have to adapt to the new environment and it will be much easier to do this if we are united."

The Corrimal Chamber of Commerce meets once a month at Corrimal RSL.
