WHILE it may not be the ideal forecast for barbecues and cricket matches, no-one is likely to begrudge the nation's firefighters the relief that will come from cool, showery weather that is forecast across southeast Australia on Christmas Day.

Wollongong is likely to be in for cool Christmas Days, although little rain will fall.

"Although there is still a little bit of uncertainty about exactly how the weather patterns will evolve over the Christmas period, it is looking increasingly likely that a deep low pressure system will form in the Tasman Sea on Sunday or Monday," Weatherzone meteorologist Matt Pearce said.

"This low will drive cold, strong southerly winds up across southeastern Australia. These southerly winds will result in showers across Tasmania and Victoria, but they will dry out by the time they reach NSW."

The region should be partly cloudy with a chance of a light shower or two, mainly along the coast, and a cool top of around 21 degrees.
