Last week local cheerleaders danced and leapt their way to the top of the state in the NSW Cheerleading Championships.
Two cheerleading ‘squads’ from dance studio NRG in Wollongong came first in NSW in Junior Cheerleading, Senior Cheerleading and Junior Pom-Pom.
Impressively, it was the first cheerleading competition the students have ever entered.
One of NRG Studios’ Principals Genevieve Anderson said cheerleading has experienced a growth in popularity.
“Only a few years ago there was probably only one or two and now there are probably about six different squads (in the region),” she said.
“The movie Bring it On, that’s definitely had an impact.
“People can look (cheerleading) up now and have access to it like they do in the States.”
Cheerleading is marked similarly to gymnastics, by a panel of judges according to set criteria.
