Mount Pleasant's Barbara Rixon will form part of a 100-strong choir to perform at this year's Carols in the City.

THIS year's Carols in the City event has just got a little bit better, with the addition of Mount Pleasant women Barbara Rixon to the list of performers entertaining on the night.

Ms Rixon will form part of the 100 strong People's Choir, a new addition to the event.

Ms Rixon said she has been receiving vocal training since she was born.

“I was born on the stage,” she said.

“My parents were singing when I was in the womb.”

Ms Rixon, like all other applicants for the People's Choir, had to audition for her place.

She said that, despite having decades of singing experience behind her, it was actually one of the few times she has been asked to audition for a choir role.

“I haven't done a lot of auditions,” an enthusiastic Ms Rixon told the Wollongong and Northern Leader this week.

“And that is because I've always gone on my reputation as a singer.

“I think it was a very fair and easy audition…it wasn't at all like Australian Idol.”

Ms Rixon said Christmas is her favourite time of year, and she loves to sing the carols.

“I think Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year (because) Jesus was born and it's a happy time and I just wanted to be part of it,” she said.

“The happiness and the joy that is spread around at Christmas is wonderful.”

“I've always sung in the carols by candlelight down in Shellharbour and wherever they've had them - so this is another opportunity.”

Ms Rixon said although she is getting older she intends to keep singing until her voice gives out.

“On my application I put I was 69 going on 49,” she said.

“I'm still singing as well as I've ever sung.

“I know my used by date is coming, but my husband has assured me he's going to tell me when it comes.”

Wollongong Carols in the City is scheduled to take place at the WIN Entertainment Centre on Saturday, December 22.

Organisers of the event are expecting a crowd of around 5000 people to attend.
