Bulli miners catch up

Bulli miners catch-up

ALMOST two decades have passed since the last production shift at the Old Bulli Colliery.

Every year since that time past employees have met on the first Saturday of December to keep the tradition alive and reminisce a heritage that goes back to 1863.

When the colliery ceased production in 1987 it was 100 years since Australia's second worse mining accident claimed the lives of 81 men and boys at Bulli.

The day after the mine closed on May 15 1987, a farewell was held at the Bulli Bowling Club attracting 250 past and present employees and setting the scene for the annual reunion.

Organised by 70-year-old retired miner Andrew Duncan, this year's reunion and dinner at the Bulli club on Saturday December 2 begins at 4pm and costs $20.

Mr Duncan said the reunion was not just for Bulli miners, but for anyone who has worked in the region's coal mines. Further inquiries can be made by phoning Mr Duncan on 46309291.
