THIRROUL JUNIOR LEAGUE
Peter Lewis

THIRROUL Butchers kicked off their 2008 rugby league campaign with a big day of trial games against Group 6 heavyweights Thirlmere.

Although league is a winter sport, glorious summer conditions greeted the Butchers when they arrived at Thirlmere’s home ground for the match.

Many youngsters played their first game of league, which were played with excellent spirit. High-quality refereeing was a highlight throughout the day.

This year the Thirroul club is concentrating on up-skilling and player development with the assistance of experienced senior coaching staff.

On Friday night the Butchers held their first coaching and management clinic, which helped build a positive atmosphere in the club.

Thirroul nurtures its mini league (six to eight-year-old) players to ensure their development and enjoyment and these teams had a great hit out against the Roosters.

The Butchers’ eight mod league (nine to 12-year-old) teams showed off their skills with some fine performances.

However, it was Thirroul’s international (13 to 16-year-old) players who really stood up.

Although Thirlmere had more than 20 players in each age group, it was Thirroul’s troops who showed the skills and commitment necessary to play the game the right way.

Thirroul’s under 14s and under 15s were short of players, but outclassed and outplayed a larger pack.

Thirroul Junior Rugby League Club welcomes all players and would especially like to see more under 14s and 15s join.
