DECKED out in high-tech defensive armour and chanting in unison, around 20 police from the Wollongong Police Operations Special Group were put through their paces on JJ Kelly Park last week.
With police safety at the forefront of public consciousnesses following the recent shooting death of a Queensland officer, Chief Inspector Donnelly from Wollongong LAC said the Public Order Management Training was a necessity.
"Obviously the tragic incident in Queensland has demonstrated the dangers police officers may face," he said.
"The hopeful outcome of this training is to make sure that police safety and preparedness remains a priority.
"This is about familiarising the officers with the equipment and making sure they are prepared for any situation."
Wearing helmets, foot guards, shin guards and carrying shields the officers were put through a variety of tasks.
With Sydney's police resources sure to be stretched during the upcoming APEC Summit, Chief Inspector Donnelly said the next time members of the group would get the opportunity to put their skills to use could be during September's world leaders convention.
