Woonona artist Anthony Marshall is inspired by local landscapes and buildings.

WOONONA-based artist Anthony Marshall has made the full journey from sketches in pen to oil paintings in his years as an artist.

Last weekend the full range of Mr Marshall's work went on display in a special exhibition at the Clifton School of Arts.

The exhibition was a 'survey' of Mr Marshall's work stretching back to 1986, when his work was exclusively sketches in pen and ink, all the way through many years of beautiful watercolours to his most recent works in oils.

Mr Marshall said he had believed oils were beyond him, not because of a lack of skill, but because the chemicals in the paint would have triggered his asthma.

However, his recent discovery of painting in oils without the use of chemicals has opened up a whole new realm of creative expression on the canvas.

Mr Marshall said his paintings are his emotional response to local buildings and landscapes.

“I generally paint the area in which I'm living and working,” Mr Marshall said.

“It's predominantly landscapes that I do.

“A good novelist writes about what they know and a good painter paints what they know.”

Mr Marshall has had many successful exhibitions over the last two decades in the region and in Sydney.

He sells a lot of his paintings, which has lead to his works being displayed in private and corporate collections all over the world.

He said that being a painter made him look at the world around him with different eyes.

“Since I've been painting seriously everywhere I go I'm looking for potential compositions and inspirations and things like that,” he said.

Along with painting landscapes, Mr Marshall has also branched out into abstraction, the results of which proved very popular with buyers.

He said even his more abstract works draw heavily on local landscapes.

The recent exhibition, which was simply called 'A Survey 1986-2007' was held last Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

An official opening by artist Paul Ryan was held on the Friday night.
