CRICKET
It would be very remiss of me not to acknowledge the magnificent contribution given to Australian cricket by recent retirees Shane Warne, Glen McGrath, Justin Langer, Damien Martyn and coach John Buchanan. I have followed all their careers with great interest and they will be sorely missed particularly the King of Spin, Warne and the persistent accuracy and wicket taking ability of McGrath.
BASKETBALL
In a wonderful performance, the St Mary's College senior women's team brought home a silver medal from the recent National Schools Championships held in Geelong.
The girls beat Willeton Sports High (Perth) 59 39 in a semi final before losing to Caulfield Grammar 59 48 in the final. All players performed well at these titles.
ATHLETICS
A total of 63 adults and 14 children too part in the annual Kembla Joggers Hangover Handicap at Mt Kembla on New Year's Day. The handicap winner was Gary Smith, while proven mountain runner, Stephen Brown from Balgownie - ran the fastest time. Fairy Meadow's Trudi Barnes recorded the fastest time for the women.
RUGBY LEAGUE
Ran into former Steelers player Mick Patterson the other day and learned he has a successful business in Singapore and is still playing rugby union, touch and doing some refereeing as well. However it may not be too long before he returns to the Illawarra as he is having a new house built in Thirroul close to the beach.
PIGEONS
Towradgi Pigeon Club recently held its annual presentation and children's Christmas party with one of the many highlights being the acknowledge of life member Jimmy Kerr who experienced an exceptional season, including a second place in the South Coast Pigeon Federation Charity Race, which raised $20, 000 for the Wollongong Hospital Children's Ward. New members are always welcome at the club. Contact the secretary on 4284 5262.
Finally did you know that Australia's newest batting sensation, Mike Hussey - was a right hander as a youngster but changed to left handed after watching his idol, Allan Border who was a natural left hander.
