Northern Suburbs acrobatic gymnasts Madelyn Bennett, Katrina Kissock and Rachel Cook have completed a superb season undefeated, culminating in hopes of qualification for next year’s world championships in Poland.
Competing in the 11-16 international category, they started the year with a superb performance at the 2009 Freedom Cup in Minnesota in the USA where they made the final eight, including team USA, with a tiny 0.9 points between first and eighth.
Acrobatic gymnastics is completed in two routines, balance and tumbling, which are made up of choreographed dance, acrobatic skills and tumbling, with each routine calculated to a score of 30.000, giving teams a total score of 60.000.
“Competing in Minnesota has given us something to aim for and we would love to be able to get to Poland in July, but we will have to see how we go in the final qualifying trials in March,” Madelyn Bennett said.
“We were the only Australian team to make the finals, which was a great thrill,” she said.
Competing with Lynette Ward Acrobatics, the trio won the NSW championships at Penrith and, representing NSW at the AIS Arena in Canberra, won the national titles.
Madelyn lives in Corrimal, while the other two girls live in Engadine, and will now continue training from their Sydney base.
Madelyn travels to Sydney five times a week for training, and will continue to do so as she dreams of qualifying for the world championships.
“With our best scores this year being 28.000 in balance and 27.600 in dynamic, we are hopeful of doing well in the trials in Sydney and qualifying for Poland,” Rachel Cook said.
