A GROUP of Year 11 students are putting the heat on some old vinyl records as part of a program aimed at developing their business skills.
Inspiya is a youth-run business formed through the not-for-profit group Young Achievement Australia, and is aimed at giving local youth the chance to learn about going into business.
The 16 Inspiya members came up with a unique idea for their enterprise earlier in the year involving heat guns and old records bought at an op-shop for 20cents each.
The group have created moulds which allow them to heat the vinyl and work it into the shape of a unique, retro-style bowl, a product dubbed the Rock ’n Bowl.
The group have been selling the innovative creations at local markets for $8 each and have decided to donate 10 per cent of profits to local charity Manna House, which provides free meals for needy people.
Inspiya operates like a real business, with group members taking on different roles and responsibilities under the watchful eyes of mentors for the program’s sponsor Illawarra Coal.
Marketing Manager Zach Kitschke said he has learned a lot from the program.
“Everything I’ve done so far…it’s kind of indescribable…I think I’ve learned heaps,” he said.
Mr Kitschke said the group were thinking of making shirts or underwear before hitting on the idea of the Rock ‘n Bowl.
They have already sold their wares at two Wollongong Produce and Traders Markets and will set up a stall at Coledale Markets on Sunday, July 27.
